Raja topped the list

Former Telecom Minister A Raja, at the centre of  the 2G Spectrum allocation scam , has earned the   dubious distinction of figuring in the list of Time Magazine’s “an ignominious club of privileged leaders who stepped too far”.

The 2G scam is ranked No 2 in the list of scandals and scams in the all-time Top 10 Abuses of Power, only next to ex-American President Richard Nixon’s ‘Plumbers’, a secret unit tasked with digging up dirt on Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg.

Raja, who is cooling his heels in New Delhi’s Tihar jail, has beaten some tough contenders to be ranked second and be ahead of Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi, North Korean autocratic leader Kim Jong-II and skirt-chasing Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi.

History of Bengal – a new chapter

A leader was born in Bengal in the year 1984. Her destiny was written as a killer of 34 years rule of CPM. Giant killer, Mamata Banerjee at a rally in Maidan on January 5, 1985, soon after winning the Jadavpur seat. (Pic : coutesy Times of India of 14 May 2011).

Mamata Banerjee started her political carrier by demolishing of a stalwarts in 1984 when she defeated CPM stalwart Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur constituency, to become one of India’s youngest Parliamentarians. After 27 years of her continuous struggle against the  regimented ruling party, finally she won her battle and reached to her destination. 13 May 2011 election results came as a shock to the ruling party. Even to the public, because everybody knew there is wind for TMC but we never thought that wind will turn to a  Tsunami which uprooted and swept away all giant-like trees like Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (Chief Minister), Nirupam Sen (Industry), Asim Dasgupta (Finance), Gautam Deb(housing). Ashoke Bhattacharya and many more.Mamata with Rajiv Gandhi at Netaji Bhawan, Kolkata

Victory Rally at Esplaned on July 21, 2009,after her stunning performance in the Lokshabha poll 2009.

After her stunning performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee making it clear that she was now thinking beyond Trinamool’s role as an Opposition party, she gave a hint of her priorities as the leader of the party in power in the state in 2011″ – that was my blog post in 2009 under a heading “Didi sees road to Writers Building“. She has finally reached to her destination – Writers’ Building.

In spite of being a union Minister and Firebrand Youth Congress Chair person, she was forcibly thrown out from the corridor of writers Building by the then CM Jyoti Basu (07 Jan 1993) and was lodged in the Police lockup. After release from Lalbazar Police lock up, on the way to home, she spent some time alone at the Gandhi statue at Mayo Road crossing at 0100 AM night. It was perhaps in this moment of solitude she took a pledge to enter Writers’ only after dislodging the CPM from power. Perhaps God rewritten her destiny that day. Today CPM has been thrown out from the Writers’ in a democratic process and made her way smooth to Writers’.

GP the future metal is ready

A composite material based on paper thin graphite and 10 times stronger than steel is set to revolutionise the automotive, aviation, electrical and optical industries, experts predict.

Graphene paper or GP, developed by Guoxiu Wang’s research team from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), can be processed, reshaped and reformed from its original raw material state.

Compared to steel, the prepared GP is six times lighter, five to six times lower in density, two times harder with 10 times higher tensile strength and 13 times higher bending rigidity, the Journal of Applied Physics reports.

Researchers have successfully milled the raw graphite by purifying and filtering it with chemicals to reshape and reform it into nano-structured configurations which are then processed into sheets as thin as paper, according to a university statement.

Lead researcher Ali Reza Ranjbartoreh said: ‘Not only is it lighter, stronger, harder and more flexible than steel, it is also a recyclable and sustainably manufacturable product that is eco-friendly and cost effective in its use.’

Ranjbartoreh said the results would allow the development of lighter and stronger cars and planes that use less fuel, generate less pollution, are cheaper to run and ecologically sustainable.

He said large aerospace companies such as Boeing have already started to replace metals with carbon fibres and carbon-based materials, and graphene paper with its incomparable mechanical properties would be the next material for them to explore.
